Falling in love with a Monster
Sometimes you don’t know who is going to be the perfect for you, you don’t know if that person will be a human, animal, god or even a monster. The mythological story, “Psyche and Eros” was written by the Greeks in order to help people understand life and love. This myth explains how sometimes the perfect person for you can be or will become a monster. At the beginning of the story, Psyche was born with the power of beauty, she was so beautiful sometimes people worshipped her as a god, “Psyche's parents boasted that their daughter was as lovely as Aphrodite. In revenge, the goddess told Eros to make Psyche fall in love with a monster”(Evans, Millard, and Matthews). Eros was so impressed of Psyche’s beauty, he scrape himself with one of his arrows forcing him he will only love Psyche. After a few days, Psyche’s parents went to the Oracle in order to get a message of the gods as for some reason now nobody could stand next to Psyche. All this happen thanks to the course of Eros. He made everyone stay away from Psyche so he could have her for his own. The gods said that Psyche was to be taken to a remote mountain-side to await her mysterious husband. Aphrodite because of her anger did not allow Eros to be visible to Psyche. Eros asked for help from the god of wind “He took her to a beautiful palace”so he could visit her in secret but must never discover who he was.( Cheryl, Anne Millard, and Matthews) . In the beautiful palace, Eros just visited Psyche at nights. After some time, Eros noticed that Psyche had become sad despite the beauty of the palace and the nightly visits, the smile of Psyche had disappeared. In fact, Eros had an idea to make her more happy. He brought her sisters to visit her. However, the sisters were jealous that her little sister had everything they wished for. They convinced Psyche to light a candle at night so she could discover her visitor was, and find out who was really her husband. Psyche knew that Eros had warned her and would prohibit this but despite that, she did what her sisters requested. Psyche was impressed when she figured out that her husband was Eros, when figured out what Psyche had done this on purpose, “He and the palace vanished at once. Psyche was heart-broken” (Evans, Millard, and Matthews).Psyche, (heart-broken), was left alone in the palace as punishment; she didn’t eat, sleep or even talk. She just thought about her wonderful Eros. However as the story continues Psyche starts an adventure to find Eros. She search castles, towns and even palaces. However, the only one who knew where he was Aphrodite. Psyche would suffer the punishment from Aphrodite and prove if she was worthy for Eros. One of the tasks from Aphrodite was that Psyche separate a huge mixed pile of wheat and barley grains. Eros, as sign of love, sent a huge army of ants to help her without Aphrodite noticing. Aphrodite was impressed by the work of Psyche. Despite this, Aphrodite then sent her to Persephone with a jar, saying it contain beauty cream. Unfortunately it actually contained the Sleep of Death. Psyche could not resist opening it and she fell into eternal sleep. What Aphrodite didn’t know was that Eros was watching over her. Eros took her to the most powerful god to help him revive his wife. Zeus decided to help and revive Psyche, as punishment to Aphrodite, Zeus made Psyche immortal so she could stay forever with Eros. Clearly the purpose of this myth, is no matter who your perfect person is, it will always be perfect for you, no matter what.
